Higher MERV filters are denser. Pushed into a thin 1-inch slot, they restrict airflow, which makes the blower work harder and can cause a furnace or heat pump to overheat or freeze up. A 4- or 5-inch media cabinet gives a high-MERV filter enough surface area to filter well and still let air through.
