What is the hybrid HVAC System

A hybrid HVAC system, also called dual fuel, pairs a cold-climate heat pump with a high-efficiency gas furnace. The heat pump heats your home most of the winter and cools it in summer. When it gets very cold, the system switches to the furnace automatically. It is one of the most popular upgrades in Toronto.

🧩 What Is in a Hybrid System

Outdoor heat pump

Heats and cools. Replaces your air conditioner.

Gas furnace

Backup heat on the coldest days, and the blower that moves air.

Indoor coil

Sits on the furnace and is matched to the heat pump.

Thermostat or control

Decides when to use the heat pump and when to switch to gas.

🔁 When Does It Switch to Gas?

The control switches at a set outdoor temperature, often somewhere around -5°C to -15°C depending on the heat pump and your energy prices. Above that point the heat pump runs; below it the furnace takes over. We set the switch point at startup and can adjust it later if rates change.
